Gani Catan, a 32-year-old volunteer footballer from Turkey, is being celebrated as a hero after his compassionate and immediate actions during a recent match. Catan, who balances his accounting career with captaining Yurdum Spor, a non-professional club, demonstrated extraordinary first aid efforts towards a small creature injured on the field.
The unusual incident occurred when the team’s goalkeeper made a powerful kick, sending the ball soaring across the pitch. Tragically, the ball struck a small animal that was on the field, causing it to be propelled into the air before falling motionless to the ground. Without hesitation, Catan rushed to the creature’s aid, performing what was described as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). His dedicated efforts led to a remarkable initial response from the animal, which began to move its legs and show signs of breathing.
After successfully assisting the creature to regain some stability, the Turkish player carefully removed it from the playing area and handed it over to the paramedics present at the match, hoping they could provide further care.
Video footage capturing Catan’s emotional rescue quickly went viral across various online platforms, garnering millions of views and sparking widespread interest and admiration from people around the world. The footballer’s selfless act also drew significant media attention, leading to interviews where he recounted the incident. “When I started pressing on its chest, it began to move its legs,” Catan described, adding, “And I kept moving, helping it until it could move again.”
In recognition of his compassionate intervention, Catan was honored with the Hero to Animals Award by the Animal Protection Organization, PETA. However, the story took a somber turn. Despite Catan’s heroic efforts and the subsequent care provided, news emerged hours later confirming the tragic death of the creature. While initially referred to by various terms and displaying characteristics of a small vertebrate during the rescue, it was later identified as a sea urchin, a detail that has added to the unusual nature of this compelling story.
