Cristiano Ronaldo has unequivocally declared his intent to continue representing the Portugal national team, dismissing any notions of immediate retirement. In a surprising development, the veteran forward has also publicly called for the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) to impose disciplinary action upon him for his controversial early departure from the national team camp.
The 41-year-old captain’s exit occurred abruptly during the recent Nations League matches. His decision came after he was notably benched in a fixture against Norway and subsequently learned he would not be included in the starting lineup for the subsequent match against Denmark. This turn of events reportedly fueled his dissatisfaction, leading to the camp departure.
In an extensive statement released on the morning of October 7, the Al Nassr striker expressed profound disappointment. He accused Portugal coach Jorge Jesus of twice undermining his trust and failing to uphold a prior agreement regarding public communication and clarification of the situation.
Ronaldo utilized the same platform to offer an apology to both his teammates and the people of Portugal. Crucially, he accepted full responsibility for his actions and called for the FPF to apply an unmitigated penalty. He stated, “The Portuguese Football Federation must assess the consequences of my actions and penalize me for them. I believe this penalty should not be lenient. I have already apologized, but I know that every action always has its consequences.”
Despite the current controversy, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner reaffirmed his desire to continue playing competitively for Portugal once any suspension or disciplinary period concludes. He also hinted at a future farewell match with the national team, signaling a long-term perspective on his international career.
Ronaldo is presently focused on reaching another significant career milestone: his 1,000th professional goal. He has currently tallied 979 goals for both club and country and has since returned to training with his club, Al Nassr, in Saudi Arabia. Meanwhile, in his absence, the Portugal national team secured victories against both Norway and Denmark. They are scheduled for their final Nations League group stage matches in November, facing Denmark and Wales.
