Sir David Beckham Makes History as UK’s First Athlete to Achieve Billionaire Status

Sir David Beckham, the iconic former footballer, has officially become the United Kingdom’s first athlete to achieve billionaire status. This significant milestone was highlighted in the recent Sunday Times Rich List for 2026.

The London-based newspaper revealed that the combined wealth of Sir David Beckham and his wife, Victoria, has reached an estimated £1.18 billion, equivalent to approximately $1.58 billion USD, for the current year. This substantial figure places the power couple second on the list of the UK’s wealthiest individuals associated with sports, trailing only the family of former Formula One chief executive Bernie Ecclestone, whose fortune is valued at £2 billion.

It is important to note that Bernie Ecclestone is not categorized as the UK’s first billionaire athlete. His immense wealth, accumulated over billions of dollars, primarily stems from his business ventures, particularly his long-standing role as chief executive and commercial rights holder for Formula 1, rather than from a career as a competitive athlete or direct participation in sports.

Sir David Beckham, who retired from his illustrious football career in 2013, has since forged a highly successful post-playing path. He currently serves as a co-owner of Inter Miami, a Major League Soccer (MLS) club now valued at an impressive $1.4 billion, making it one of the league’s most valuable franchises. Furthermore, the 51-year-old former midfielder, who famously played for clubs such as Manchester United, Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, AC Milan, and Paris Saint-Germain, continues to hold prominent ambassadorial roles and partnership agreements with numerous renowned global brands, including Adidas and Hugo Boss.

Throughout his playing career, Beckham was a pivotal figure for the England national team, though he did not secure any major international trophies. However, at the club level, the master of long passes and free kicks enjoyed immense success, amassing a collection of prestigious titles including the UEFA Champions League, the English Premier League, La Liga, and Ligue 1.

In a profound recognition of his achievements in sports and his extensive charitable endeavors, King Charles III of the United Kingdom officially bestowed the esteemed title of ‘Sir’ upon David Beckham on June 14, 2025. This knighthood represents one of the nation’s highest honorary distinctions. Beyond his remarkable football career and successful business ventures, Sir David Beckham has been a dedicated UNICEF ambassador since 2005 and also became an ambassador for King Charles’ King’s Foundation in 2024.

Victoria Beckham’s significant wealth largely originates from her highly successful fashion brand, which she established after gaining international fame as a member of the iconic British pop group, The Spice Girls. Despite their respective ages, the couple continues to maintain their prominent global reputation and influence.
