FIFA Under Scrutiny: New York, New Jersey Attorneys General Launch Investigation Into World Cup 2026 Ticket Fraud

The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) has been officially summoned by the Attorneys General of New York and New Jersey. The summons demands that FIFA provide clarification regarding alleged fraudulent practices and irregularities in the sale of tickets for the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 tournament.

This action comes amid increasing concern from both state offices regarding reports of exorbitantly high ticket prices and numerous complaints from fans who claim their purchased seat locations were misrepresented or altered.

Attorneys General Letitia James of New York and Jennifer Davenport of New Jersey each issued separate, strongly worded statements on May 27. Their respective offices are jointly demanding comprehensive information and full cooperation from FIFA concerning the entire ticketing process for the 2026 tournament.

Fan complaints detail instances where individuals were allegedly misled. For example, some supporters purchased premium Category 1 tickets, expecting seats in prime locations close to the field, only to discover upon receiving their tickets that they had been assigned to less desirable Category 2 sections in entirely different areas of the stadium.

Attorney General James underscored the significance of the event for local residents, stating, “New Yorkers have waited years for the World Cup to come to their backyard, and they deserve a fair opportunity and rightful possession of their tickets. High ticket costs should guarantee trust and accuracy.” Attorney General Davenport echoed these concerns, directly accusing FIFA of creating a confusing and exploitative ticket sales environment characterized by both fraudulent misrepresentation and excessively inflated pricing.

Both James and Davenport affirmed that their offices would be initiating a comprehensive investigation into these alleged ticketing irregularities. This probe will specifically examine the reported surge in ticket prices for the FIFA World Cup 2026 matches scheduled to be held in New York and New Jersey, comparing them to historical pricing trends for previous World Cup tournaments.

The MetLife Stadium, located on the border of New Jersey and New York, is slated to host eight matches during the FIFA World Cup 2026, a significant schedule that includes the prestigious final match on July 19. The tournament itself will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with the opening fixture scheduled for June 11 in Mexico and the grand final concluding on July 19 in the United States.
