Silvio Gazzaniga, the renowned Italian sculptor and designer, is globally recognized for his masterful creation: the FIFA World Cup trophy, which remains in use to this day. His iconic design stands as a timeless symbol of football’s greatest achievement.
The need for a new trophy arose after Brazil secured permanent possession of the Jules Rimet trophy in 1970, having won the championship for an unprecedented third time. Following this historic event, the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) launched a worldwide competition to design a replacement. This prestigious contest drew submissions from 53 artists across seven different countries. Ultimately, FIFA selected the groundbreaking work of Gazzaniga.
Gazzaniga meticulously crafted the new World Cup trophy in 1971. The Italian artist described the profound meaning behind his design as a cradle supporting the entire planet, symbolizing the immense excitement, energy, and greatness experienced by a player upon winning the championship.
Since 1974, the distinctive World Cup trophy has featured a captivating design: a dynamic curved line depicting two athletes reaching upwards in celebration, supporting the Earth. Standing at 36.5 centimeters tall, the trophy is forged from 18-karat pure gold and weighs 6.1 kilograms. It is further adorned with two layers of green malachite stone at its base. While appearing solid, the trophy is actually hollow; if it were made of solid gold, its weight would exceed 70 kilograms, making it impossible for winning players to lift in triumph. West Germany had the distinct honor of being the first nation to hoist this newly designed trophy.
Born in Milan, Italy, Silvio Gazzaniga dedicated the majority of his life to the world of art and design, specializing in medals and other prestigious awards. He passed away in 2016 at the age of 95. Although he is no longer with us, his artistic legacy endures, appearing before billions of people every four years as the pinnacle of footballing achievement.
Beyond the illustrious FIFA World Cup trophy, Gazzaniga’s portfolio includes the design of several other significant sports awards, such as the UEFA Cup, the UEFA Europa League, the UEFA Super Cup, and the UEFA European Under-21 Championship trophy. His contributions have left an indelible mark on the landscape of international sports.
