Germany has triumphantly secured their spot in the Last 32 of the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026, a significant achievement that ends a challenging period of early tournament exits. The team’s qualification was dramatically sealed by VfB Stuttgart midfielder Deniz Undav, whose pivotal performance ensured their progression after winning both of their initial group stage matches.
This success marks a stark contrast to Germany’s recent World Cup campaigns. In the 2018 tournament, the former 2014 champions surprisingly crashed out in the group stage, managing only three points after a 1-0 loss to Mexico and a 2-0 defeat against South Korea, finishing behind Sweden.
The disappointment continued at the 2022 World Cup, where the German squad faced further setbacks. Despite a 4-2 victory over Costa Rica and a 1-1 draw with Spain, a critical 2-1 loss to Japan, conceded in the 83rd minute, left them with just four points in Group E, once again leading to an unexpected group stage elimination.
Fast forward to the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers, Germany has showcased renewed determination. They became only the third team to book their place in the Last 32, following co-hosts Mexico and the United States. Their decisive second group game saw them overcome Ivory Coast with a 2-1 victory on June 21.
Deniz Undav emerged as the hero of the match against Ivory Coast. The German side initially fell behind in the 30th minute to a goal from Franck Kessie. However, Undav demonstrated his crucial impact in the second half, leveling the score at 1-1 in the 68th minute. The midfielder then secured the dramatic win for Germany, netting the decisive goal in the 90+4th minute, clinching a thrilling 2-1 victory.
With six points from their two wins, Germany confidently leads Group E and has confirmed their advancement to the knockout stages. The battle for the remaining qualification spot in Group E is still fiercely contested among Ivory Coast, Ecuador, and Corasau. Ivory Coast currently holds three points. Germany still has one final group stage fixture against Ecuador on June 26, while Corasau will face Ivory Coast concurrently.
Globally, the expanded group stage of the tournament features 48 teams across 12 groups. So far, three nations – Turkey, Haiti, and Tunisia – have been eliminated from their respective groups, with remaining fixtures set to complete the group stage picture.
