In a stunning display of grit and burgeoning talent, newcomers Cape Verde continued their remarkable journey at the World Cup, securing an exhilarating 2-2 draw against two-time world champions Uruguay. This captivating Group H encounter unfolded at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on the morning of June 22, marking another surprising result for the African nation following their goalless draw against Spain in their opening match.
The island nation wasted no time asserting themselves, with Kevin Pina unleashing a magnificent long-range free-kick in the 21st minute to put Cape Verde ahead. This audacious lead, however, led to a more aggressive approach from Cape Verde, inadvertently creating spaces in their defensive line. Uruguay, ever the opportunists, quickly capitalized, with Maxi Araujo finding the equalizer in the 44th minute. The half looked set to end level until Agustín Canobbio struck in the 45+6th minute of stoppage time, sending Uruguay into the break with a 2-1 advantage.
Entering the second half, Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguayan squad continued their relentless offensive against Pedro Leitão Brito’s resilient Cape Verdean side. Yet, Cape Verde once again demonstrated their resolve. In the 61st minute, Helio Varela seized upon a defensive error, capitalizing on a slip from Uruguay defender Mathias Olivera’s backward pass, to level the score at 2-2. Uruguay intensified their efforts to reclaim the lead, even seeing a potential winning goal from Federico Valverde disallowed by the referee for an offside infringement. Both teams created further opportunities in the closing minutes, but neither could secure a decisive third goal, leading to the dramatic 2-2 stalemate.
With this result, both Uruguay, now in second place, and Cape Verde, in third, sit on 2 points from two matches in Group H, keeping their hopes of advancing to the Round of 32 alive. Spain currently leads the group with four points after a dominant 4-0 victory over Saudi Arabia, positioning them as strong favorites to progress. Saudi Arabia, at the bottom with just one point, will face Cape Verde in their final group stage match, needing a win to secure their own path to the knockout stages.
