Heartbreaking news has emerged from Venezuela following a powerful earthquake that claimed the lives of nearly 2,000 people and left over 5,000 injured. Amidst the widespread devastation, the football community has been particularly affected, with two prominent players suffering the unimaginable loss of their wives and children.
The natural disaster has inflicted immeasurable pain across Venezuela. Among those impacted is Héctor Bello, a dedicated footballer for Marítimo de La Guaira in Venezuela’s top-tier league. Bello’s wife tragically lost her life in the earthquake, making the ultimate sacrifice to save their daughter. She bravely shielded her child with her body amidst the collapsing rubble, embodying an extraordinary act of maternal love and courage.
In a poignant message shared by the Venezuelan forward, Bello expressed his profound grief and admiration for his late wife: “I will recount to our daughter how you saved her life, how you selflessly sacrificed your own for her. You were a courageous woman who never abandoned our child, not even in your final moments.” He continued, grappling with the weight of his loss: “You have departed, leaving me to navigate this battle alone. How am I to explain this to our daughter? You gave your life to save her, and I was not there to offer any assistance.”
Bello’s teammate, Lucas Trejo, an Argentinian player, also endured an immense and unexpected loss. After more than 70 hours of intense search and rescue efforts, his wife and two children were tragically found among the deceased.
The 7.2 magnitude earthquake also tragically ended the lives of several other promising young Venezuelan footballers. These included Yimvert Berroterán, who perished alongside his girlfriend; Razan Sijaa, a talented Under-18 player for Caracas FC, who died while with family members; Ricardo Veloz, another gifted young Venezuelan prospect; and 14-year-old Víctor Palacios, who harbored dreams of achieving international football recognition.
These individual accounts represent just a fraction of the devastating human toll exacted by the catastrophic earthquake. Each story underscores the profound and enduring sorrow that has descended upon countless families across Venezuela. As of June 30, reports from Al Jazeera indicated that the death toll from the successive earthquake events had risen to 1,719, with 5,034 reported injuries. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) tragically estimated that the final number of fatalities could potentially reach as high as 10,000.
