Heartbreak for Japan at World Cup 2026: Moriyasu Hails Team’s Top-Tier Play, Laments Enduring Lack of Luck

Japan’s national football team once again faced disappointment at the FIFA World Cup 2026, exiting the tournament in the Round of 32 after a 2-1 defeat to Brazil on the morning of June 30th. This early departure, occurring after they advanced past the group stage, echoes their campaigns in both 2018 and 2022, where they also failed to progress significantly beyond the initial knockout stages.

Despite the setback, Japan’s head coach, Hajime Moriyasu, expressed his belief that the team’s level of play has significantly improved, now matching that of the world’s top-tier nations, including powerhouses like Brazil. However, he lamented a persistent lack of luck that he feels has hampered their progress.

This recent elimination marks the fourth occasion that the ‘Samurai Blue’ have been defeated in the first knockout round across their eight total appearances in the World Cup. Japan continues to strive for its inaugural victory beyond the group stage, a goal that has, unfortunately, remained elusive. Following the team’s exit from the competition, Coach Moriyasu acknowledged the continued failure to achieve their ultimate objective but affirmed Japan’s unwavering determination to realize their ambitions in subsequent World Cup tournaments. The 57-year-old coach particularly praised the current capability of the Japanese squad, asserting their parity with the elite footballing nations.

In a reflective statement, Moriyasu remarked, “I believe history seems not to have granted us the opportunities we seek, but if we can conquer the challenges we encountered today, perhaps we will discover the pivotal moment to truly transform our historical narrative. Brazil stands as a top-level team, and we have demonstrably reached this high standard ourselves. We must continue to vigorously expand our capabilities even further.”

Recalling previous World Cup disappointments, Japan’s 2018 campaign in Russia saw them eliminated in the Round of 16. Despite holding a commanding 2-0 lead against Belgium in the first half, they ultimately succumbed to a 3-2 defeat. Similarly, in the 2022 tournament held in Qatar, Japan exited in the Round of 16, losing to Croatia after a tense penalty shootout.

In their recent clash against Brazil, Japan managed to take an early lead in the 29th minute of the first half, courtesy of a goal from Kaishu Suno. However, the second half witnessed a strong resurgence from the Brazilian side. They launched relentless attacks against Japan, eventually scoring two crucial goals to secure a comeback victory. Casemiro netted the equalizer with a header, and Gabriel Martinelli sealed the win with a late goal, dashing Japan’s hopes.
