The South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) has officially announced the postponement of two major continental club tournament matches, following a devastating earthquake that struck western Colombia on August 10.
The powerful earthquake, registered at a magnitude of 7.4, severely impacted Colombia’s crucial coffee-growing region. Tragically, the seismic event claimed the lives of at least 164 individuals and left nearly 500 injured. With a focal depth of 103 kilometers, this earthquake has been recognized as the most potent tremor to affect the region in the 21st century. In response to the widespread destruction, local authorities initiated large-scale rescue operations across multiple affected cities, simultaneously placing all hospitals on red alert to manage the influx of casualties.
Specifically, the Copa Libertadores fixture between Colombian club Deportes Tolima and Ecuador’s Independiente del Valle, originally scheduled for August 11, has been deferred. Similarly, the Copa Sudamericana encounter set for August 12, featuring Independiente Santa Fe from Colombia and Argentina’s River Plate, has also been pushed back. CONMEBOL confirmed that new dates and venues for these crucial matches would be announced at a later time, allowing for a thorough assessment of the situation.
The governing body for Latin American football released an official statement addressing the crisis. “During this incredibly difficult period, CONMEBOL extends its deepest sympathy and unwavering support to all the people of Colombia, particularly the Colombian football community,” the statement read. “Given the severity of the situation and with paramount concern for everyone’s safety, as well as out of respect for the victims, both continental matches have been temporarily suspended.”
Furthermore, the Colombian professional football league, DIMAYOR, which was set to commence its season this week, also declared a temporary halt to all domestic matches, underlining the widespread impact of the disaster on the nation’s sports calendar.
