FIFA Overturns Balogun Red Card Following US Presidential Intervention, Clearing Striker for Belgium Clash

Folarin Balogun, the prominent striker for the United States national team, has been officially cleared to participate in their upcoming Round of 16 match against Belgium. This pivotal decision follows a direct intervention from the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), which opted to waive a red card previously issued to Balogun.

The controversy began when Balogun received a red card during the US team’s 2-0 victory over Bosnia in the Round of 32. The incident, stemming from a foul on Tarik Muharemovic, would have typically resulted in Balogun’s automatic suspension from the subsequent match, adhering to standard football regulations. Even Coach Pochettino, as mentioned in reports, believed the red card was not appropriate given the circumstances of the foul.

However, the case garnered significant attention and high-level appeals. United States President Donald Trump directly urged FIFA President Gianni Infantino to review the penalty. Echoing this call, US Secretary of State Marcus Rubio also formally requested a re-examination of the decision. These diplomatic and presidential interventions highlighted the perceived injustice of Balogun’s suspension.

Following these insistent appeals, particularly after President Trump’s direct engagement, FIFA conducted a fresh review of the incident. The global football governing body ultimately decided to rescind the red card, thereby allowing the 25-year-old Balogun to feature in the crucial match against Belgium.

President Trump publicly lauded FIFA’s decision to remove the red card, characterizing it as a rightful act of justice. In a post on Truth Social, he stated, “Thanks to FIFA for doing the right thing and stopping a huge injustice.” This sentiment was reportedly echoed by the White House, which also applauded the lifting of the sanctions just ahead of the critical encounter.

The United States is scheduled to face Belgium in their Round of 16 fixture on July 7, with kick-off set for 7:00 AM at Lumen Field. Balogun’s availability is expected to be a significant boost for the US squad as they vie for a spot in the quarter-finals.
