The FIFA World Cup 2026 is already making history, even before the group stage concludes. Teams participating in the tournament have collectively scored an astonishing 177 goals, establishing a new record for the most goals ever recorded in a single World Cup edition. This remarkable achievement surpasses the previous record of 172 goals, which was set during the entire 2022 World Cup in Qatar across 64 matches.
What makes this record particularly notable is the speed at which it has been broken. The 173rd goal, which officially eclipsed the 2022 record, was scored in just the 59th match of the 2026 tournament. This significant milestone occurred during a crucial Group D encounter on the morning of June 26, when Auston Trusty’s opening goal for the United States set the new benchmark. Following Trusty’s strike, four additional goals were netted in the thrilling match, which ultimately saw Turkey secure a dramatic 3-2 victory in the final minutes. These subsequent goals further contributed to the burgeoning tally, bringing the total to 177. Of this total, 12 goals have been own goals, highlighting the intense and sometimes unpredictable nature of the competition.
The increased scoring frenzy can be attributed, in part, to the expanded format of the 2026 World Cup. For the first time, the International Football Federation (FIFA) has increased the number of participating teams from 32 to 48, leading to a total of 104 matches scheduled for this edition—significantly more than the 64 games played in 2022. FIFA President Gianni Infantino has commented on this record-breaking goal count, attributing it to the exceptional attacking prowess and competitive spirit displayed by the players.
Several star players are already making their mark on the scoresheet. Lionel Messi, representing the defending champions Argentina, has provisionally led the scoring charts with an impressive five goals in his first two games. Following closely are France’s Kylian Mbappé, Norway’s Erling Haaland, and Brazil’s Vinícius Júnior, each of whom has netted four goals apiece. Other notable goal-scorers contributing to the high tally include Matheus Cunha (Brazil), Jonathan David (Canada), Deniz Undav (Germany), Ismael Saibari (Morocco), Johan Manzambi (Switzerland), and Brian Brobbey (Netherlands).
