Klopp’s appointment follows the departure of Julian Nagelsmann, who resigned in July. Nagelsmann’s tenure concluded after the team’s exit from the FIFA World Cup in the Round of 32. Earlier in his role, Nagelsmann, who had guided Germany to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Euro 2024 tournament, had publicly committed to a two-year plan to lead Germany to another world championship title. However, this ambitious promise did not come to fruition, with the team delivering what were considered disappointing and ‘shameful’ results. The 39-year-old Nagelsmann ultimately announced his resignation after Germany’s elimination from the 2026 World Cup in North America at the hands of Paraguay. His departure paved the way for Klopp’s return to professional coaching, marking an end to a two-year hiatus from the dugout.
Ahead of his initial official match with the national squad, Klopp, who is 59 years old, was directly questioned by reporters about the team’s prospects for winning silverware. The coach firmly dismissed making any such guarantees. “I don’t want to promise anything at this moment,” Klopp stated. “What I can say is that we will try, and that is precisely what we are doing now: focusing intently on the level we are currently at. I am leading the senior team, and my fundamental task is to implement an effective football system. Through this, we will undoubtedly create opportunities to win every game we are scheduled to play. While success cannot be guaranteed every single day, we are diligently building towards it, and I am hopeful that we will witness a notable difference in our upcoming matches.”

Germany’s schedule for the upcoming UEFA Nations League campaign begins with the match against the Netherlands on the night of September 24.
