Jubilant celebrations across Mexico following the national football team’s advancement to the Round of 16 in the FIFA 2026 World Cup were tragically overshadowed by the deaths of four supporters and injuries to three others. The incidents occurred amidst widespread revelry as fans took to the streets to commemorate their team’s significant victory.
Mexico secured their place in the knockout stage after defeating Ecuador 2-0, a result that ignited a nationwide outpouring of excitement. The team’s qualification, particularly as a co-host of the upcoming tournament, was met with immense national pride.
Among the casualties, two female supporters, aged 48 and 44, and a 19-year-old man, were found unconscious near the iconic Independence Monument, also known as El Ángel, in Mexico City. According to statements posted on social media by Mexican health authorities, these individuals tragically passed away after experiencing fainting spells amidst the dense crowds.
Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada conveyed her condolences and outlined the immediate response, stating that authorities were dispatched to the scene upon receiving reports of fans fainting. Despite rapid deployment, the victims had already succumbed. Later, during a news conference, Mexico City Health Secretary Nadine Gasman confirmed an additional fatality: a man in his 30s who reportedly suffered from epilepsy and internal bleeding. He was pronounced dead after being transported to a hospital while celebrating the national team’s triumph.
The scale of the celebrations was immense, with Mayor Brugada estimating that at least 1.4 million fans gathered in the city, particularly around the Independence Monument, after Mexico’s victory over Ecuador in the Round of 32. This massive congregation led to significant overcrowding. In response, Mayor Brugada urged all celebrating fans to exercise extreme responsibility, prioritize individual safety, and demonstrate mutual understanding to prevent further incidents.
Looking ahead in the 2026 World Cup, co-hosts Mexico are scheduled to face England in the Round of 16. England recently secured their spot by defeating the Democratic Republic of Congo in their own Round of 32 match.
