The Philippines national football team is strategically enhancing its roster by calling up a significant contingent of mixed-heritage and naturalized players from various international leagues, primarily in Europe and the United States. This pivotal move comes as the squad prepares for the inaugural FIFA Asean Cup in 2026, a newly established tournament designed by FIFA to elevate football across the ASEAN region.
The decision to integrate these overseas talents is poised to transform the Philippines into a formidable contender, making them a team not to be underestimated in the competition. While most of the squad’s members play for clubs outside the country, only one player, Daisuke Sato from Taguig FC, currently represents a club within the Philippine league. A substantial number of these international call-ups—eight players—are based in European leagues, with two more joining from football clubs in the United States. Furthermore, the team boasts players born on Philippine soil who also play abroad, such as Sandro Reyes, alongside other locally born talents like Amani Aguinaldo, Kenji Nishioka, and Javier Gayoso.
Among the European-based contingent, the team welcomes Bjorn Kristensen, a Norwegian-Filipino forward from Norway’s KFUM Oslo. He is joined by fellow Norwegian-Filipino Sebastian Rasmussen, 24, who plays for Hobro IK in the same Norwegian league. The midfield will be strengthened by Randy Schneider, a 25-year-old Swiss-Filipino player with experience at Winterthur in Switzerland and currently with the Spanish club Andorra. Schneider notably made his national team debut in March 2025.
Defensive reinforcements include Paul Tabinas, a 24-year-old defender of Japanese, Ghanaian, and Filipino heritage, who currently plies his trade with Dynamo Zagreb in Croatia. His brother, Jefferson Tabinas, has also been called up, adding to the team’s defensive depth from Malaysia’s Selangor Red Giant club.
Head coach Carles Cuadrat has also looked to Europe’s promising youth, bringing in two rising stars: Isiah Alakiu, an 18-year-old from England’s Brighton & Hove Albion U21 squad, and Angelo Bruckner, 23, from Germany’s fourth-tier club SpVgg Bayreuth. Additional European-based players contributing to the squad include Christian Rontini and Scott Woods.
The Philippines are set to kick off their FIFA Asean Cup campaign in League One, Group B, with their opening match scheduled against regional powerhouse Vietnam on September 26. This initial group stage fixture will take place in Indonesia. The team will then face Pakistan on September 29, before concluding their group stage encounters against Thailand on October 2, another strong opponent in the region.
